Maria João Magalhães
Maria João Magalhães is a Portuguese designer based between Portugal and London.

Her working method is very analogue, sensorial, and experimental. She always likes to get out of her comfort zone and explore the most unlikely techniques and materials and merge them into the digital. Colour is the most predominant element in her work, always aiming to achieve vibrant and saturated hues.

Lately, her focus has been on understanding how she can relate her graphic design knowledge to the world of fashion, with the goal of expanding her creative space.

Devil Wears a Mask

A publication about the Portuguese tradition of Entrudo Chocalheiro, more specifically about its main characters: Caretos. It’s a combination of images and text focused on representing the movements, colours, and sounds of these figures. The book invites the reader to experience the approach of a Careto and the interactions with him.

Saturation 100%

A platform that gives people the space to share their view on the world, while giving colour to it.

Saturation 100% is a website/app where people can upload their images and push the saturation to 100%. Apart from having their profile, with their own grid of images, they also have access to an archive that combines every photo posted from every user.

Every image has an associated location, which then populates a map. This provides a way of seeing cities with more colour and life.

This platform will also be a driver to create a new community, where people can share their perspective of the world through images, as well as seeing the world through other people’s eyes.

Maria Mia is a venture designed to explore the symbiosis of graphic design and fashion in the creation of a collection. It strives to address a world characterised by vibrant colours and diverse shapes, encouraging the fusion of patterns and the use of clothing as a means of self-expression.

I’ve worked with techniques such as block printing, laser cutting, sewing and photography to achieve the final outcome.

[FLUXO] is a sensory experience where water comes alive with fluid movements and mesmerising sounds. The resource is represented through experimental materials, light reflections and dynamic movements. The creation of water without water, through an idyllic, perhaps magical environment.
